Best season
Warm year-round. Winter (Nov–Feb) is the most comfortable, around 16°C in January; summer is humid, hot and wet. The Water-Splashing Festival in mid-April is the liveliest week of the year — and the hardest for booking a room.

About

Tropical rainforest and monsoon climate, with Jinghong at just 553 m — the low-altitude exception in Yunnan, where altitude sickness is essentially absent and oxygen is close to sea level. It sits near 21°N, averages 19–23°C across the year and about 16°C in January, which makes it the obvious winter escape. This is Dai country.

Getting there

Ringed by mountains, so flying is easiest: Gasa airport is about 5 km southwest of Jinghong, roughly ¥20 and 20 minutes into town. Direct flights come from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu and Chongqing, around ¥1,000 one way. Driving from Kunming is about 520 km and 6.5 hours on the expressway.

Getting around

Locals ride electric scooters — the climate is warm, no air conditioning needed, and they get into the villages easily. Shared scooters cost ¥2 for the first 15 minutes then ¥1 per 10 minutes, roughly ¥5–10 an hour.

What to eat

Dai barbecue, lemongrass-grilled fish, pineapple rice, pounded chicken feet, and tropical fruit.

Know before you go

The classic mistake is the railway: this line is the China–Laos railway, which does not connect to the high-speed network, so long-distance travellers must change at Kunming — and board at the central Kunming station, not Kunming South 30 km away. Summer is humid and close, mountain roads are slippery in the rains, and there are plenty of mosquitoes.
